Room 21's Calendars

Sunnyhills School is making school calendars for a fundraiser. In Room 21, we made stained glass windows. First, we learnt all about shades of colours and how to make them with paint. We were amazed by how many shades of one colour you can make by adding white, black or other colours.

First, we drew a small circle on our page. This is where the sun is hitting the stained glass. Next, we drew lines from the circle out to the edge of the page. This is to show us how the sun's rays would hit the window. Next, we drew a simple picture over the top of our lines. We needed to keep it simple, with big shapes, because painting tiny shapes is too hard.

Drawing and colouring our drafts. Can you see the different shades?
Then we started to colour in. Wherever the shape we were colouring in went across one of the lines we drew at the beginning, we had to change to a different shade of the same colour. This is to show how colours change with light. We used crayons to colour in our drafts. It was tricky to colour in with crayons, because there are not many shades of crayon. Luckily, we are a creative class and we managed to make a lot of different shades. We weren't too worried about it though, because we knew that we would have more shades when we painted.

When our draft was finished, we carefully drew our design onto our calendar and then it was time to paint! We had such a great time painting - even though it was VERY messy! Luckily we had two parent helpers and a learning assistant to help us. We worked super hard and got all of the painting finished in one day.

Once our paintings were dry, we ruled over the lines in vivid and went around the outline of our shapes with black crayon.

We also used crayon to highlight important parts of our picture and to make it look clean and finished.

We put a lot of time and effort into our calendars. We hope you like them! If you do, remember to order some to help the PTA with their fundraiser. You can buy calendars, diaries and cards of your child's work.

Topsy Turvey Day

On Friday at school it was Topsy Turvey Day! Topsy Turvey Day was a Mufti day to raise money for a charity. We all came dressed in strange costumes - some people came in their pyjamas (even Miss Williams!), some were wearing half uniform and half mufti, and some even came with their underwear on their heads!!

During the day, we did some fun and silly activities that were all topsy turvey too. The only thing that wasn't allowed to be topsy turvey was our behaviour. First, we walked backwards in line to our music class with Mrs Larcombe. It was really hard to walk backwards! When we arrived, she said "good afternoon Room 21", even though it was 9 o'clock in the morning! She told us we were doing geography for the day, but she was just being topsy turvey, because we did do music.

After music we had a parade of all our topsy turvey clothes in front of the whole junior school. We loved looking at other people's creations and we REALLY loved showing off ours. There was music playing and we danced around the courts and posed for people to look at us. We felt like we were famous!
This is Room 21 showing off our weird and wonderful clothes in the Topsy Turvey Parade!
After the parade, it was time for Morning Tea. Then we went back to class and read a poem by Spike Milligan called 'On The Ning Nang Nong'. It was very silly and funny. We tried reading it backwards, which was extremely hard. Since we liked the poem a lot, Miss Williams found a story by Spike Milligan on Youtube called 'Bad Jelly the Witch'. We listened to the story, but there were no pictures so we had to create the pictures in our heads.

For the afternoon, we had buddy time which is our favourite time of the week. We played a water balloon game with our buddies. We had to throw a water balloon back and forth to our buddy without dropping it. Each time we caught it, we had to take a step away from our buddy. It got harder and harder to catch and a lot of people got wet! Luckily, we played it just before home time, so no one had to stay wet all day.

Everyone in the whole school had a fun day. We got to be silly and look funny. We all laughed a lot. We hope we made a lot of money for the sick children.

When We Made Gloop

On Monday we made gloop for Maths! We used our measuring skills to mix one part water to two parts of cornflour to create a gloopy mess!

The gloop was as slippery as snail slime! We had so much fun playing with the gloop. The gloop looked runny, but when you hit it it was solid! When we had finished having fun with the gloop, Miss Williams and Mrs Wallace poured the gloop in some balloons. We got a vivid
to draw a funny face on the balloon. We all had our own balloon. The balloons were squishy and a lot of fun to play with.

We learnt some things about measuring and about making gloop stress balloons:
  1. Some balloons popped because people were throwing them or pulling them hard. Next time, we would know that we have to be very gentle.
  2. We made a big mess and lost a lot of our gloop by not keeping our hands over the bowl.
  3. You need to add the water very slowly and mix the flour in really carefully each time you add water. It turns from gloop into liquid really suddenly. Next time we would add smaller amounts of water at a time.
  4. If you add too much water to your gloop, you can try three things to thicken it. Add more cornflour if you have it (we didn't), add some baking powder (this only worked if it was just a tiny bit too runny) or leave it to sit in the sun for a while.

Junior Disco

On Friday we had a disco! When we arrived, there were some ladies giving out some glow-sticks. The glow-sticks were very shiny. We danced with our friends. The DJ chose some leaders and we played follow the leader. Wow, it was a long line!

We got very got and thirsty dancing. If we were thirsty we went to our drink bottles box  and got out our drink bottles.

After that the DJ called the year zeros to get their sausage sizzle. The year ones and the year twos had to dance until they were asked their sausage. Finally the music man called our room number.

Afterwards we played the zombie game. We had to put our hands out and act like a zombie. Then we had a pretend sword  fight. We  had to get a partner and fight like knights. At last, the DJ asked us to sit own and let our mums and dads to come to collect us. Some teachers gave us some chips. We had a great time.

Kahurangi Dance Group

When I got to school on Tuesday I wondered what we were doing. Then I remembered that my class and I were going to a show! I was so excited I could hardly wait!

Luckily the show was only at 9: 00am. It was not long until Miss Williams said  “Everyone line up outside, please. We are going to Kahurangi Dance Group in the hall. ”

At the start of the show they introduce themselves. The first story that they told was “Hatupatu and the Bird Woman”. At the end of the story I felt amazing because they did things that I could not do.

They also did amazing poi. I was amazed at how thy had two poi in each hand. I loved it!

Ronald McDonald visits Sunnyhills School!

On Monday morning my class (Room 21) went to the hall to meet a famous person! I felt super excited. When we arrived at the hall, we first sang some songs .Then came the famous person!

It  was Ronald McDonald!

He came to teach us about road wise. Ronald McDonald told an interesting story. It was about Ronald McDonald finding his red and white sock. In the story, he first went outside and hung the washed pair of red and white socks on the line. Mrs Yates read the story to the junior classes. He could even hang the sock on a soft blanket! I was very surprised! It was such a windy day that one of the socks blew away.

Ronald decided to go to Sunnyhills School to find his red and white sock. He wanted to drive or ride on a bicycle to school. Instead, Ronald McDonald decided to walk to school. He said “footpaths are for walking, not for playing.” Then he walked to a road that he needed to cross. He came to a zebra crossing. He was a bit silly, so he said “ you stay over here while I run across the road.” We all shouted “NO!!!” Ronald McDonald said “then what shall I do? Hmmmm?” Then Ronald McDonald said “when you cross the road you have to step back, and then stop, look and listen before you cross the road.”

At last, Ronald McDonald got to school and hoped he could find his sock there. He couldn’t find his sock anywhere. He said “where can we find things that we have lost?” We all said “the lost property box!” So Ronald McDonald walked to the lost property box. Every class then saw that the lost sock had been on his back the whole time! Then he chose a little girl to reach for the red and white sock on his back.

Ronald McDonald then said “I have a present for you.” A person was holding a netball and a football!

Finally all the junior classes went back to their own classes. I was glad to have seen Ronald McDonald.

Puppet Pals

At Sunnyhills this term, we have all been learning about the Olympic Games. We had our first try at using the Inquiry Process (a research model) to learn about a country that was competing in the Olympics.

We each chose our own country to study (you can see our flags a few posts down) and we did all the research ourselves - we felt like University students!

First, we had to write questions that we wanted to know about our country. Then we used Google and books to find the answer to our questions. That part was very hard because some of the sites had different information, so we weren't sure which information was true! Next, we had to highlight the most important part of our research and then write it in our own words. Finally we presented our information on stars around our beautiful flags.

Today in ICT, we learnt to use an app on the Ipads called Puppet Pals. We used this app to share our information about our countries. You can watch our creations on Youtube! Some of us only had time to share a few of our facts. We have a lot more, so next time you're in the school, pop in and see them - you will be so impressed!

Maori

In Maori, we are learning to name the parts of our body.

With our buddy class (Room 6) we went outside and our big buddy traced around our body in chalk.

Then we worked together to label all the parts of our body that we knew using English and Maori.

We ended up being able to lable 14 different body parts in Maori! How many could you name?

Mainly Maths

Life in Room 21 took an exciting turn last week, when we used the iPads to help us with our learning for the first time. The iPads have some amazing apps to help us with Reading, Writing and Maths and also help us to think about, and share our learning.

The first thing we did on the iPads was use the app Educreations. It is a program that lets us write down, photograph and talk about our learning. It is a fun way to be able to share our thinking with you.

In Maths, we are learning to skip count in 3s. We used the Macarena movements while we said the numbers to help us to remember the pattern. (Ask us to show you the Macarena using Skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s - it is great for our learning, we are really good at it and we love doing it!)We took photos of ourselves doing the Macarena, photos of the right number of counters and wrote the number in numerals, English words and Maori words to help us to remember the pattern. It was our first time using educreations and we had a lot of fun while learning!

We hope you enjoy watching our Educreations as much as we enjoyed making them!
